Cambridge, UK – 28th June 2010 –– Pixel Power, the leading supplier of broadcast graphics systems, has today announced that it has secured a major graphics technology contract from SABC, for initial use on the broadcaster’s comprehensive Fifa World Cup 2010 coverage, then for deployment across its output. The deal has been overseen by Pixel Power’s South African partner Zimele Broadcasting.

Appointed as the Host Broadcaster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa, HBS has decided to renew its successful collaboration with EVS for the supply of instant tapeless technology and support services during the production of this flagship event. EVS systems are in use at different levels of the host broadcast production operations, including the IBC and various OB facilities working at the venues for the live production of the 64 matches.

EVS introduces GX, a 1RU fill and key playout server offering instant graphic playback functions and full control capabilities from all standard switchers and controllers. GX is the ideal system for playing out HD graphics, whether you are broadcasting from a studio or a mobile unit. GX supports all standard control protocols, allowing different media formats to be easily imported and immediately brought to air under external mixers and controller device commands. The result is a highly efficient and reliable speed-to-air control system for clips and graphics.

Broadcasting to a na­tion can be challenging enough, but broadcast­ing to an entire conti­nent (and beyond) – a region covering nearly a quarter of the 32 quali­fied FIFA World Cup™ nations – poses its own particular issues. “The challenge is always the same, to simultaneously satisfy big members and small members, qualified members and unqualified members,” explained Cesar Gerba­si, Technology Director of OTI. “It is a challenge to keep everyone satis­fied but we are making periodic enquiries to our members and, as far as we know, eve­rybody is happy.”

Just over 50 personnel for all pro­gramming provide the ears and voices to BBC Radio’s presence in South Africa. “We have one studio on site at the IBC,” says Joanne Watson, Planning Editor for BBC Radio, “but, apart from the odd ‘eclectic’ show, like [radio football pundit] Danny Baker’s, most of our coverage has been from the ven­ues and outside the IBC. We have a breakfast show which is follow­ing the England team, and will stay with them for as long as they are in the tournament.”

This may be the fourth FIFA World Cup™ that Claude Phipps, Director of Special Proj­ects for ESPN (USA), has attended, and the fifth for Geoffrey Mason, Head of 2010 Production Planning, but there is still room for surprises. “This is the biggest operation that ESPN has undertaken for a World Cup,” explains Claude, “and the response has been fantastic.”

Despite his national team Greece seeing elimination in its last game of group B (M36), Aris Nikolaskis, Sport Coordinator, is still able to see many positives at this tournament. “I’ve been to other World Cups, but I’m really pleased with this one,” says Aris, “the set-up has been fantastic. Everything has been very well or­ganised, there are more facilities; I am personally very comfortable here.”

With huge strides forward in stereoscopic 3D this year, and a continuing ferment of developments in IP-based technologies, the Conference will examine the technologies and workflows that make continuing evolution possible, as well as the changing business models that underpin the industry. Award-winning sound engineer, Howard Lindeman, is using the Avid VENUE D-Show System for the 2010 European tour of Elvis Presley in Concert. This astounding production reunites some of Elvis’ former band mates live on stage with a state-of-the-art, video-projected Elvis.
