Cable-suspended camera systems in studio. Unique camera angles with impressive AR in Sky Italia and RTVE
Technology for TV Studios is developing at unprecedented speeds. With automation, digitalization, and increasing graphics capabilities studio production is becoming the hottest growing sector in the TV industry. More and more studios are now thinking about adding cable-cameras to their set of production hardware. Compared to a crane, which has more limited movement, a cable-camera offers visuals which are more dynamic and voluminous. New systems specifically designed for studios take up less physical space than a typical crane would. New production requirements are changing quickly (e.g. remote unmanned operation), at the same time there is demand for new types of shots - more interesting, dynamic and innovative. A cable-camera system is one of the best creative tools that can provide all those types of shots.
The increasing demand for remote interaction of artists and sound engineers has led the two companies to offer consultancy and turn-key packages to address these applications. “ViViD” packages include Vivivaldy VPN solutions combined with DirectOut products supporting RAVENNA, such as PRODIGY.MP and EXBOX.RAV. DirectOut’s RAVENNA implementation allows uncompressed real-time audio over IP transmission with ultra-low latency or with buffer times all the way up to 500ms.
Imagine Communications, which helps broadcasters and content owners monetize TV, has entered into an agreement with Sky Media, the advertising sales arm of Europe’s leading entertainment company, to transform the way that multiplatform media advertising is bought and sold. In a collaborative five-stage project, Imagine will work with Sky Media to evolve its existing, on-premises Landmark™ Sales application into a cloud-based, fully managed service for cross-platform campaign sales management, inventory optimization and adaptive audience fulfilment. This marks the latest chapter in the strong relationship between the companies, which has grown since 2007.
Q: Is remote production just a fad?
A: Remote production is clearly here to stay in Europe and across the globe, pandemic or no. Our viewing habits and broadcast expectations have been forever altered by the wrath that was 2020. Traditional sports like football and tennis found themselves in the same position as niche sports, and all reaped the same technological benefits of product timelines and applications accelerated in ways no one could have predicted. Technology vendors will continue to focus on IP within their product development throughout 2021. Live streaming technology that will be well poised for our needs in 2021 and beyond must be able to handle many formats, provide unprecedented bandwidth, and require little to no training.
Regarding the sonic impression, opinions on sense and nonsense of such cables often differ greatly. Here Sommer cable tries to shed a light into the darkness: those different opinions are because silver is “alive“ due to the natural oxidation. Unlike copper oxyde, silver oxyde is conductive, i.e. its electrical and mechanical properties can vary slightly over a longer period of time. This also causes the tone color to change, which is why we can observe different audiophile impressions, and some musicians or hi-fi aficionados may perceive the sound of a silver cable as rather neutral, cool, or overly bright.
The Beacon Jams were a hugely successful 8-week ‘virtual residency’ presented by guitarist and singer-songwriter Trey Anastasio (AKA lead singer of Phish) and MSG Entertainment in New York City’s iconic Beacon Theatre. The shows were live-streamed free exclusively on Twitch at 8 p.m. every Friday through October and November 2020. The artist played with varied arrangements of his Trey Anastasio Band (TAB), adding and changing line-ups and special guests each week, offering a dynamic mix of live music and interactive entertainment. With up to 12 musicians onstage and the immense challenge of playing live with no audience in such a famous venue, production and lighting designer Marc Janowitz from E26 Design thought out of the box!

Lighting designer Hugh Taranto lit a vibrant array of artists performing on the Sydney Stage for the 2020-21 Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)’s New Year’s Eve broadcast. The high-profile event culminated in a jaw-dropping pyro spectacular fired off the Sydney Harbour Bridge, stretching right across Sydney Harbour … watched in awe by millions across Australia and worldwide. This year the event was named “We Are One” following 12 gruelling months that started with raging bushfires and ended with the ongoing pandemic. As the date neared, the very tough decision was taken to go ahead without a live audience, due to general Coronavirus concerns, then a fast-spreading local cluster developing in the days immediately prior meant that even plans for a limited capacity ‘local hero’ audience – nominated by communities – had to be dropped.
