The 5G TODAY project officially launched its unique field trial for 5G Broadcasting. The project partners Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (Bayerischer Rundfunk, BR), the Broadcast Technology Institute IRT, Kathrein, Rohde & Schwarz as well as Telefónica Germany are jointly testing broadcasting options for future 5G technology. The new large-area 5G field trial in the Bavarian alpine region is covered by two high-performance transmitters located in Ismaning and on the top of the Wendelstein mountain. Both operate with 100 kilowatts effective output power (technically: ERP). With the help of the high transmission towers and the high power of the transmitters (High-Power-High-Tower-Concept, HPHT), the large-area broadcasting of TV programs can be tested based on the new broadcast mode FeMBMS (Further evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service). The FeMBMS broadcast mode allows far-reaching and inexpensive distribution of popular content across large coverage areas with a radius of up to 60 kilometres.

Blackmagic Design announced HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR, a new innovative broadcast deck with advanced H.265 8K recording combined with touch screen user interface and traditional broadcast deck controls. Vislink Technologies (Nasdaq:VISL) introduces its INCAM-HS integrated wireless camera transmitter, which is built into Sony’s new HDC-5500 4K multi-format live camera system. Vislink Technologies’ INCAM-HS provides full HEVC 4K UHD broadcast-quality encoding as well as 1080p, 1080i and 720p resolutions, plus built-in wireless camera control and HDR support. This solution is on display at the 2019 NAB Show (Vislink Booth C6008, Sony Electronics Booth C11001).

Swiss production and broadcast company tpc, part of the major Swiss public media business SRG SSR, is building a news, sport and technology center in Zurich. This all-IP center, built around the SMPTE ST 2110 family of standards, will use the Selenio™ Network Processor (SNP) from Imagine Communications to provide advanced IP-to-IP video and audio processing, as well as conversion between legacy SDI feeds and equipment and the newly built IP infrastructure.

AJA Video Systems is now shipping two new SMPTE ST 2110 IP video Mini-Converters. The IPR-10G2-HDMI and IPR-10G2-SDI are compact, quiet and powerful video and audio receivers that are capable of bridging 10-bit HD IP video signals to HDMI and SDI. Italian public broadcaster RAI will start broadcasting 8K content in 2020, starting with the Tokyo Olympics, making it the first broadcaster in Europe to use the technology. A preview of the broadcaster’s plans was made at a conference in Rome, during which several examples of productions in 4K and 8K were presented to the public.
