The truth is no one in the ecosystem (content creators, pipe folks/suppliers) left the global broadcast, media technology event to enjoy the fruits of their labor because there's way too much work to be done to get great content from the creator to the viewer.

The 8K Association (8KA), the leading cross-industry group promoting growth and harmonization throughout the 8K ecosystem, is pleased to announce that an 8K Association Certified program for 8K TVs is now available for 8K TVs that meet the exacting requirements outlined by the 8K Association. 8K Association Certified TVs feature 4 times as many pixels as standard 4K TVs for impactfully realistic clarity and deliver exceptional contrast and color for striking high dynamic range performance. Member companies of the 8K Association will be able to promote 8K TVs under the 8K Association Certified banner after each TV model’s performance criteria is validated by an independent Certification Program Manager. Under this certification program for 8K televisions, TV brands will be able to display the 8K Association Certified logo to consumers to demonstrate the verified high-performance characteristics of each TV model.

At one point not so long ago, certain elements of the broadcast industry were hoping that “2020 would be the big year for 8K, because of [Japanese broadcaster NHK’s] plan to broadcast the Summer Olympics in 8K,” recalls Chris Chinnock, president of Insight Media and executive director of the 8K Association. “That was going to be the premier event, all kinds of new equipment was going to be announced, and there was going to be some hype and pomp and circumstance around 8K, certainly in Japan. Now, all that is postponed at least a year, so we will have to wait and see what happens.”

During the last few years 3D has progressed a huge amount. Most mainstream films are now released with a 3D version. In most cases outperforms 2D at the box office– for instance the biggest grossing film of all time is Avatar, which was primarily released in 3D. It is also making inroads to the television market with some sporting events being broadcast in 3D to pubs and, albeit in a limited number, homes with 3D equipment.

We live in a 3D world, but a screen only has two dimensions: horizontal and vertical. We can watch a film on a 2D screen because the 2D image contains visual cues (clues, or hints) about depth, the third dimension.

HEVC and 4K were the hottest topics at September’s IBC event in Amsterdam, and will continue to be of high interest as we move into 2014. But we must ask ourselves, could HEVC and 4K fall into the same false start trap that the once hyped 3DTV fell into?

Rugby fans had the opportunity to experience the RBS Six Nations Championship England v Wales match in 3D at 40 cinemas around the UK last weekend. Further to the box office success of 3D movies such as Avatar and Monsters v Aliens, mobile and broadband provider, O2 and 3D production specialists, Inition, brought audiences a further dimension with a landmark 3D broadcast to the big screens.

4K Garden, a major 4K content services platform of Alibaba group in China has signed an agreement with Sony China Professional Solutions Group (CPSG) to purchase an IP- 4K outside broadcast truck. The agreement was signed at a ceremony on 24th August at the Beijing International Radio, TV & Film Exhibition 2016 (BIRTV 2016), held this year at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing.
